How It Works
The Lawrence Virtual School uses curriculum and services provided by K12. Learning can happen at home, on the road, or wherever an Internet connection can be found. While attendance, teacher interaction, and daily lessons are conducted online, our lessons use physical materials and offline tools as well.
Licensed Teachers, Superior Teaching Tools
At the Lawrence Virtual School, all students interact with one or more experienced and attentive state-licensed teachers (depending on the grade level) and communicate regularly with their teachers through email, telephone, and online meetings. Our educators have extensive training in current educational best practices regarding virtual education, home schooling, child development, and access to resources of one of Kansas' largest school districts. Each family is eligible to receive a loaner computer as well as boxes of materials, including a wide array of textbooks, CDs, videos, and other hnads-on tools and resources. These materials complement the interactive online elements of our program, ensuring that students receive instruction using the best method for each subject matter.
Extensive Support System
We also provide an extensive support system to both parents and students. Working closely with the teacher, the parent (or other responsible adult) acts as a "learning coach" to the child, helping to facilitate his or her progress and working to modify the pace and schedule as needed. Each teacher is state licensed and trained in his or her specific subject area, and in most cases reside near families in the majority of the state to allow for face-to-face meetings. Their primary responsibility is assessing, monitoring, and assuring the success of each student through weekly live sessions for students, supplemental activities, and tips on how to motivate and work with students with different learning needs. In addition, monthly networking opportunities are provided through various events and outings, enabling the entire school community to keep in close contact.
Individualized Learning, Public School Accountability
In addition to providing individualized learning, as an online public school program of the Lawrence School District, LVS provides the structure, experience, administrative support, oversight, accountability, and state testing required of all public schools.
